What is Alar Base Reduction?
The complaint of a nostril that is “too wide” is a complaint among many patients, and especially in certain ethnic groups. Alar base reduction or alarplasty (“nostril narrowing”) surgery is a procedure that can narrow the width of the nostril base, decreasing the amount of nostril flaring or decrease the size of the nostrils.
Approaches to Alar Base Reduction
The ultimate goal of alar base reduction surgery is to approach the procedure in a way to provide the patient with the ideal anatomy and proportions relative to the individual patient’s characteristics. Facial harmony should be achieved by blending the lower third of the nose, taking into account the entire shape of the nose, into the face with a natural appearing result.
Alar Base Reduction: How Is It Done?
To accomplish alar base reduction and your natural apprearance, Dr Lee makes an incision in the crease where the nostril wall meets the cheek. A wedge shaped piece of nostril wall is removed, and the incision is meticulously sewn closed to minimize scarring. The procedure can be performed under local anesthesia with little down-time.
