Lunchtime treatment for submental (under chin) fat

Depending on the amount of fat to be treated, two to six sessions will be scheduled approximately six weeks apart. Each session takes fifteen to twenty minutes making this an ideal lunchtime treatment.

Following treatment, patients may have some swelling and bruising which will resolve in two to seven days. For this reason, it is best to schedule treatment at least two weeks before an important event. Using an ice pack on the treated area a few times a day and taking non-prescription pain relief will handle any discomfort. If bruising is a concern, our office offers lymphatic drainage treatments and surgical strength Arnica and Bromelain to help your body resolve bruising and swelling faster.

Does Kybella work for everyone?

Candidates for Kybella injections are those who have moderate to severe fatty deposits under the chin and are unhappy with their appearance. Most people are good candidates for this procedure since the product is a replica of a naturally occurring acid in the body used to dissolve fat. Candidates should not have an infection at the treatment site and should be in good health generally. Before Dr. Lee administers Kybella to her Beverly Hills patients, she ensures they have no underlying conditions that would make treatment unsafe.

The elasticity of the patient’s skin should be sufficient to ensure the removal of the fat does not create a cosmetic outcome that is just as unpleasant as the double chin. Patients with poor elasticity or who have a considerable volume of submental fat may be left with hanging skin that will require a neck lift or a minimally invasive procedure to tighten the skin to fully rejuvenate the area. This would be the same outcome after liposuction surgery or Kybella injections in these patients.

What can I Expect During my Treatment?

Patients should arrive at their sessions with their faces and necks thoroughly cleaned to avoid the risk of infection. They should also abstain from taking ibuprofen or acetaminophen prior to their visits. When you arrive, your skin will be numbed with a topical anesthetic to ensure your complete comfort and relaxation. A surgical pen will be used to mark the locations of your injections for the highest levels of precision. Ultra-fine needles are used to administer Kybella into areas of submental fullness. Most patients receive 2-4 injections per session with minimal discomfort.

What are the Benefits?

Kybella provides many benefits for patients who want to get rid of their double chin, including the following:

  • Provides a smoother, more sculpted, youthful jawline–no more double chin
  • A safe, more gentle alternative to liposuction
  • Minimally-invasive procedure
  • No downtime
  • Short recovery period
  • Is a synthetic form of a fat-destroying acid made naturally in the body
  • Achieves long-lasting results

Is Kybella safe?

Kybella is a synthetic form of acid naturally occurring in the gut to digest fat. The synthesized material, called deoxycholic acid, works by destroying the membrane surrounding the fat cell which allows the fat and other material to be naturally absorbed and eliminated by the body. Once the fat has been targeted by Kybella, it is permanently gone. When delivered by a trained professional Kybella is a safe and highly effective procedure. Injectables can cause temporary facial paralysis if injected into a nerve branch or anywhere other than the target area. In addition, if Kybella is mistakenly injected into skin cells, it can cause tissue damage. Los Angeles residents are fortunate to have many choices for cosmetic procedures such as this, but Dr. Lee cautions anyone considering having Kybella, Botox®, or any other procedure to ensure they have entrusted their care only to a board-certified specialist, such as a facial plastic surgeon or dermatologist.

These professionals have many years of training on the anatomic structures of the face, including nerves. While the procedure appears deceptively simple, proper placement of each injection is vital to a successful outcome.
