What is a Facelift?
Facelifts have been popular among all lifts over the years. According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, facelifts figure among the top six popular cosmetic procedures performed in the U.S. Also called as ‘rhytidectomy’ that translates from Greek as wrinkle removal or excision, facelift restores the youthful look.
The need for facelifts
Aging brings with it a set of inevitable signs. These include facial wrinkles, creases, lines, sagging and loss of skin texture. Although wrinkles and sagging are commonly associated with advancing age, it can be also seen in people who excessively sunbathe or are exposed to harsh sun due to the nature of their work. People who smoke or who are exposed to environmental pollutants are also at high risk of developing premature wrinkles.
The skin has three layers
” Epidermis which is the outermost visible layer
” Dermis which is below the epidermis
” Subcutaneous layer which is the innermost layer
The dermis has plenty of “elastin” which are elastic fibers that maintain the smoothness and elasticity of the skin. The dermis layer also has “collagen” which is a type of protein that maintains the volume and tightness of skin adding to its overall healthy appearance. The outer layer also helps waterproof the skin, while defending against microorganisms and harmful oxidative stress from ultraviolet rays. The innermost layer is made up of fat and connective tissue that adds to the skin volume.
With age or damage to skin, there is loss of collagen and elastin, while the subcutaneous fat decreases. The pores enlarge on the epidermal layer making it susceptible to ultraviolet damage. Gradually, wrinkles appear due to loss in elasticity and volume on the facial skin.
